Swimmers hit the pool for APS Girls Metro Championship

ALBUQUERQUE – Swimmers from 16 teams in the metro area gathered at West Mesa Aquatic Center on Jan. 11 to find out who is the best female swimmer in Albuquerque (and Rio Rancho, of course).

That’s right, it was the APS Metro Swimming & Diving Girls Championship and the RRPS teams represented the City of Vision well.

The Rio Rancho Rams finished in third place with 231 total points. Kendal Moody finished in third in the 100 free, which helped boost her team to the medal stand, but the Rams strength was in their all-around skill level. While they didn’t win any of the events, they placed near the top in almost all the events.

The team nature of the Rams came in handy when the relay portion of the championship began. The girls finished third in the 200-meter Relay and fourth in the 400-meter Relay.

The Cleveland Storm took fifth overall with 162 points and strong showings in several events.

Storm star Ava Schlosser won the 50-meter Free event, completing the race in under 25 seconds. She also finished third in the 100-meter backstroke.

The girls’ teams now look ahead to APS Meet #7 taking place at the West Mesa Aquatic Center Jan. 24-25.

That doesn’t mean the APS Metro Swimming & Diving Championship is over, however. The boys’ teams will take their turn in the pool this Saturday, Jan. 18, also at the West Mesa Aquatic Center.
