RRHS Basketball's first annual Spring Break Youth Basketball Camp
RIO RANCHO — The Rio Rancho High School boys basketball team hosted its inaugural Spring Break Youth Camp March 17-21.
“We have 20 girls in this camp, and we have over 80 kids. We do co-ed; we’ve done co-ed for 16 years,” RRHS head coach Wally Salata said.
The RRHS gymnasium was filled with tons of boys and girls learning ball from some of the best.
RRHS players helped coach groups of campers as did some RRHS coaches.
“We bring them out here, we make them feel comfortable, we teach them the basics, and then we also engage our players to take the coaching roles ... so that these kids have someone to look up to,” RRHS coach Ramon “Swoops” Montano said. Montano has been with the RRHS basketball program for more than a decade and is currently the C-team head coach.
Campers learned basketball basics and fundamentals and played plenty of 5-on-5 games every day.
“I learned that jump stopping is really important so then you could get all the power you need to shoot,” Ernest Stapleton third grader LeAndro Ramirez said, who also mentioned that he would love to suit in a Rams uniform some day.
Each camper received a camp shirt and a basketball for attending; perhaps one day they will play for Salata’s Rams.
“Noah [Lovato], one of our varsity players, has his little brothers out here. We see these kids grow and go through the program,” Montano said.
The next RRHS youth basketball camp will come June 2, and RRHS summer youth camps regularly sell out.
“We have sold out the last 11 years, so if people want to get their kid in, usually they register early,” Salata said.
