BERNALILLO — After pleading guilty and claiming mental health issues, a young man was sentenced to 15 years Sept. 26 for the second-degree murder of his father and tampering with evidence two years ago.

Zane Skinner, now 20, of Rio Rancho, was accused of shooting and killing his father on Dec. 9, 2022, and waiting 24 hours to call 911.

He was scheduled for a six-day trial in September. However, he pleaded guilty just a few weeks before the trial.

As detailed in the plea agreement between Skinner’s defense and the state, he will receive treatment during his sentence.

While the total sentence is 15 years, Skinner will be placed on probation after six years and will be placed on GPS when released. While in New Mexico Department of Corrections, he will be housed in the mental health unit.
