Maggie Cordova gets Buddy Bench
Students from Maggie Cordova Elementary School help dedicate the playground’s new “buddy bench” Thursday.
RIO RANCHO — Maggie Cordova has a new bench at its playground. However, it’s not just any bench.
The Rotary Club provided the school with a “buddy bench,” which are spaces where students can signal to their peers that they are in need of a buddy. Students who are feeling lonely having tough moments or just need a friend can sit at the bench, with the goal of others noticing and joining them.
The goal of the project is to support inclusivity during times on the playground. Several classes came out to help dedicate the bench Thursday, as were Lori Lowen and other members of the Rotary Club; Rio Rancho Police Officers Daisy Gomez and Christ Beck — along with police dog Rio — and Rio Rancho Public Schools’ Jerry Reeder.
