PLACITAS — Placitas Pizza Co. opened its doors October 2020 and has already become an area favorite for locals wanting something delicious that doesn’t require a long drive.

“A large part of us opening here was because of Placitas. The community is just wonderful. It just makes it such a joy that they genuinely appreciate the pizza, and we appreciate making it for them,” owner Tony Micklos said.

Micklos owns Placitas Pizza Company along with Jed Brock.

“With the exception of the cafe or the grocery store, we’re the only thing open on the weekends during the daytime hours. So, if you’re looking for a quick bite and you don’t feel like making it at home or you don’t want to run in town or over the bridge, this is kind of it,” Micklos said.

Both Micklos and Brock hatched the idea to open a pizza joint while they worked at Blades Bistro, which is right next door to the current Placitas Pizza Company location.

“People within the community, as we were waiting on them [at Blades], talked about pizza saying, ‘We really need a pizza place in this community!’” Micklos said. “The community just wanted good, old-fashioned pizza.”

Placitas Pizza Co. offers sandwiches, salads, pizzas and specialty pizzas that include the Barbacotto (slow-cooked pork with homemade tangy barbecue sauce and onions), Viaggio a Taos (chicken, green chile and onions over a garlic white sauce), and the I Lavori (their take on a supreme pizza).

“You can have sandwiches, you can have salads, you can have pizzas. It’s a great place to just swing by, grab something, stay there and eat, eat there at the Plaza or just go home,” customer Kathryn Aby said. “I really love the fact that they use fresh ingredients, and they source from as local as they can.”

Although most of their regulars are from Placitas, Micklos is hoping to reach customers from across the freeway.

“It’s been an interesting, interesting ride because up until two years ago, we didn’t have these booths or anything because we were still under that [COVID restrictions] umbrella. None of this stuff is bolted down; we can still move and really grow into space, and that’s what we are really looking forward to doing next year. We can add in a few more tables in here for a more of a dining experience,” Micklos said. “Just come in and give us a try.”

Placitas Pizza Co. is open every day except Tuesdays, and are open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. They are located at 221 NM 165 Suite I, Placitas.
