Rio Rancho High School’s early-season share of the top spot in District 1-5A was swept away at Volcano Vista Thursday evening.
The Hawks (13-5, 3-0) played fundamentally well in their 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 victory.
"They showed up to play and we didn’t show up to play, and that’s kinda what happens," RRHS coach Toby Manzanares said. "We weren’t passing the ball very well and we’re a pretty good passing team."
A 7-0 run in the first set gave the Hawks a 10-3 lead, and they led the rest of the way. The Rams later pulled within 24-22 after a Volcano Vista service error at set point, but a kill through a block closed out the set.
The second set was tied 12 times, with the Rams again within striking range late, trailing 23-22 before the Hawks put it away.
In the final set, the Rams relinquished what had been a 17-16 lead and were outscored 9-3 down the stretch to end any hopes for a comeback.
"I just told our kids, ‘Hey, we haven’t played this bad all season. Chalk it up to experience and move on,’" Manzanares said. "Credit Volcano for touching a lot of balls defensively — they didn’t let balls drop. We were taking swings 12-, 15-feet off the net."
The loss snapped a three-match winning streak for the Rams (10-5, 2-1).
Dinks: Cleveland (2-14, 1-3) was home Thursday evening and posted its first district victory of the season, claiming a 25-15, 25-20, 25-23 sweep of Atrisco Heritage Academy.
