A woman is dead following an accident on NM 528 near Sundt Road on Wednesday, Rio Rancho fire spokesman Paul Bearce said.

According to Bearce, a man, a woman and a toddler were driving north on NM 528 and trying to turn left onto Sundt Road. The driver of a southbound pick-up truck then allegedly struck the passenger side of the sedan, the side of the car on which the woman was sitting.

Rio Rancho Police Sgt. Nicholas Onken said police and emergency medical personnel were called to the scene about 12:50 p.m. When officers arrived, the 51-year-old woman who was a passenger in the sedan was unresponsive and pinned in the vehicle.

"They found there was nothing they could do," Onken said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man and child were taken to UNM Hospital and were alert, Bearce said. The man driving the pick-up and his female passenger were also taken to a hospital. None of the people transported to hospitals sustained life-threatening injuries, Bearce said.

Both vehicles had heavy damage.

No one involved in the fatal accident has been identified. Onken said police were confirming the identity of the woman and notifying her next-of-kin.

The southbound lanes of NM 528 were closed at Rockaway Boulevard for about three hours, and Sundt was closed at NM 528 for longer.

The investigation is ongoing, Onken said.
