The Rio Rancho Observer has hired award-winning reporter Lee Ross as a staff writer to report on the Sandoval County Commission and health news while also assisting with feature writing and covering breaking news.

Ross comes to the Observer from the Mountain View Telegraph, where he covered business, schools, crime and breaking news in the East Mountains and Estancia Valley. Prior to a reporter position with the Telegraph, Ross was a freelance writer with his work appearing in such publications as New Mexico Business Weekly, High Country News and The Weekly Alibi.

“I’m pleased we were able to hire a reporter with such great credentials as Lee brings to the Observer,” said Rick Carpenter, Observer managing editor. “He’s a likeable person who brings a high level of curiosity, which will translate into well-written stories.”

Ross has won awards from the National Newspaper Association for feature writing and photography, and from the New Mexico Press Association for business writing and breaking news. He is a 2001 graduate of the University of New Mexico with an art history degree with a minor in physics. He also took classes in art studio and journalism.
